Shop, Macclesfield Street, Soho, c1883. Grocer's shop selling tea and ginger beer, with theatre posters. 'This street, like Gerard Street, was named after Charles Gerard, first Earl of Macclesfield, who died in 1694 (Cunningham's Handbook). The shop, well known to architects as "the oldest shop in London," was probably built about 1690.' Description by Alfred Marks. The building was later demolished.
