On Gorleston Sands, 1887. Gorleston-on-Sea is a coastal town in the borough of Great Yarmouth in Norfolk. Gorleston's port became a centre of fishing for herring along with salt pans used for the production of salt to preserve the fish. In the early 20th century the fishing industry rapidly declined and the town's role changed to that of a seaside resort. From "Wild Life on a Tidal Water : the adventures of a house-boat and her crew" by Peter Henry Emerson, [London, 1890]. Emerson's book focused on Great Yarmouth, the gateway from the Norfolk Broads to the sea.
