Decayed Fishermen, 1887. In 1702, the Corporation of Great Yarmouth founded the Fishermen's Hospital, a charitable institution to house 'decayed fishermen'. The fishermen and their wives were accommodated in 20 terraced cottages. From "Wild Life on a Tidal Water : the adventures of a house-boat and her crew" by Peter Henry Emerson, [London, 1890]. Emerson's book focused on Great Yarmouth, the gateway from the Norfolk Broads to the sea.
