The chamber of Philip IV in the Buen Retiro Royal Palace, 1881. Mariana of Austria, queen regent of Spain between 1665 and 1675, converses with the Jesuit Father Nithard, her confessor and confidant, in the presence of her son, Charles II, still a child. The scene takes place in a room of the Buen Retiro Palace in Madrid, which is decorated with works linked to Velázquez and King Philip IV: Las Meninas, the equestrian portraits of Philip III and his wife from the Salón de Reinos of the Buen Retiro, the portraits of hunters from the Torre de la Parada, and the mirrors with eagles from the Alcázar.
