Saint James the Pilgrim, 1496-1497. Alternative title: The Apostle Saint James. Saint James the Greater carries his pilgrim's staff or walking stick. On his fur hat is the scallop shell, distinctive symbol of pilgrimages to Santiago de Compostela in north-west Spain. Such is the importance of the pilgrimage to Compostela that the pilgrim's attributes even influenced the other two iconographies of James, as apostle and as knight, which explains the appearance of the book in this work, a symbol of evangelical doctrine.
