Saint Francis of Assisi kneeling in meditation, 1664. Francis is depicted kneeling, his hands crossed over his chest, his gaze directed towards a crucifix. Beside it, on a rocky outcrop, are a book and a skull, creating a meditative atmosphere. The saint is identifiable by his brown habit and the long cord that encircles his waist and falls to the ground. The scene unfolds in a rock shelter, and a fragment of sky is visible in the upper left. In the lower right, a half-folded piece of paper stands out, bearing the inscription: "D. to Mariana de la Cueva / y Barradas fat. / year of 16[¿6?]4." This inscription identifies the artist as Mariana de La Cueva Benavides y Barradas, a painter of whom no other works are known. We know that she was "wife of Don Francisco de Zayas, Knight of the Order of Calatrava, and sister of three other Knights of the Order", and was "an excellent painter in Granada." The painting is significant because it introduces the name of a Spanish female painter whose artistic profile was previously unknown, as no works of hers were known. Adding to this interest is the growing attention that art historians have paid in recent decades to gender issues, and specifically to the integration of women into the art world.
