The Mass of Saint Gregory, 1650. While Pope Gregory I was celebrating Mass in the Basilica of the Holy Cross in Jerusalem, one of the acolytes doubted Christ's presence in the Eucharist, and at that very moment, Christ supposedly descended upon the altar, naked, crowned with thorns, displaying his wounds, supported by two angels and surrounded by the symbols of the Passion.
