The Supper at Emmaus, 1601. Biblical scene: Jesus Christ, after his resurrection, dining with two of his disciples in Emmaus. The disciples wear scallop shells (or "cockle shells"), on their cloaks. Pilgrims to the shrine of James the Great, at Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, often wore that symbol on their hats or clothes.
