Self-portrait, 1918. In 1919, Bonnat, already a highly prestigious painter in his native France, accompanied the King of Spain during his visit to the French Academy, where he was awarded the Grand Cross of Alfonso XII. It is likely that he painted his self-portrait for the Museum of Modern Art in Madrid in gratitude for this honour. Bonnat portrayed himself realistically, without any desire to flatter himself, as can be seen in his aged face, now etched with wrinkles. His attire is elegant: a black jacket with silk trim and a white tie. There is no visual reference to his profession, thus depicting himself as a famous man, recognized for his physical appearance rather than his status as an artist.
