Alfonso XIII, cadet, 1901. Alfonso (1886-1941), future king of Spain, had been commissioned by the Captaincy General of Valencia following the medal he won in 1899. The sumptuous palatial setting contrasts with the almost fragile image of the adolescent. As a homage to Velázquez, Pinazo plays with the effects of light and depth produced by the door in the background and the side windows. Alfonso wears a uniform consisting of a navy blue tunic with a row of seven gold buttons, a matching collar with a gold bugle and crown on each side, the centre of which bears a Y, the emblem of the Infantry Academy; three gold epaulettes on the cuffs, typical of light infantrymen; and a triangular shoulder board of the same cloth bearing the inscription A XIII with a royal crown, all in gold. The entire garment and the front pockets are trimmed with black ribbon. Straight-legged trousers of garnet cloth with a blue stripe down the sides. Cadet's sabre of the General Military Academy, model 1883. He poses in the military position of rest, with his left hand over his right - holding his white gloves. Hanging from a red ribbon around his neck is the insignia of the Order of the Golden Fleece.
