The portrait has been identified as Don Juan José of Austria , but it bears no resemblance to the portraits of him that are known to exist, and therefore this identification cannot be accepted. Furthermore, although he wears the Cross of St. John of Malta on his chest, the enormous Golden Fleece visible on his clothing invalidates this identification, since...Don Juan José of Austria was never awarded such an honour.
