Don Juan of Austria, early 17th century. This portrait is one of the few surviving images of the illegitimate son of Charles V and the German singer Barbara Blomberg. Juan (1547-1578) was half-brother of Philip II and a key figure in the victory at Lepanto. The general and strategist is dressed in a ruff, chain mail, breastplate and slashed hose, and wears the insignia of the Order of the Golden Fleece on his breast. A lion lies at his feet.
