Philip V, King of Spain, c1700. Portrait of Philip V (1683-1746), the first Bourbon monarch of Spain, at an undetermined point in his youth. In November 1700, he was proclaimed king during a lavish ceremony at Versailles, in the presence of his grandfather, Louis XIV, the "Sun King," and the entire French court, who thus endorsed his claim to the throne of Saint Ferdinand, based on the will of the last Habsburg, Charles II. The artist likely did not know the new monarch personally, judging by the unusual features depicted. He has portrayed the prince in armour with the baton of command; the lion, the helmet, and the flags lying at the feet of the proposed sovereign are all intended to highlight the suitability of his candidacy to rule Spain in opposition to the Austrian pretender, Archduke Charles of Habsburg. Across his chest is the distinctly French blue sash of the Order of the Holy Spirit.
