Alfonso XII on horseback, 1897. Equestrian portrait of King Alfonso XII (1857-1885). The king, mounted on a chestnut horse, wears military uniform: dark blue jacket lacking rank embroidery or insignia, with double-braided gold cord shoulder knots, and fastened with a row of nine gold buttons. His attire includes crimson breeches, riding boots, a crimson silk sash with gold tassels, white gloves, general officer's sabre, kepi with a visor, and chin strap of black patent leather, a buttoned loop over a cockade in the national colours, and three gold braids as the insignia of his rank of captain general. On his chest he wears the badge of the Grand Cross of the Royal and Military Order of Saint Ferdinand, of which he was Sovereign, and the Alfonso XII Medal of the Third Carlist War, featuring two silver bars on the ribbon.
