The painter Eduardo Zamacois, 1863. Portrait of fellow Spanish artist Eduardo Zamacois y Zabala (1841-1871) who worked in Paris. The portrait, oval-shaped like some others by Zamacois from the same period, depicts him in the same year as his first participation in the Paris Salon, where he would achieve success at the end of his short artistic career. He looks at the viewer, wearing a red beret and sporting the beard he would keep until the end of his life. He died suddenly, aged 29, of what was described as "gangrenous angina" (possibly Diphtheria).
