Francisco de Paula Antonio de Borbón, Infante of Spain, late 18th century. Portrait of the Infante don Francisco de Paula (1794-1865), youngest son of Charles IV of Spain and Maria Luisa of Parma. From the 16th century, young boys in parts of the Western world were unbreeched, and wore gowns or dresses until they were toilet trained. The young prince points to a toy drum, traditionally a toy for boys.
