Alfonso XII of Spain, c1878. Portrait of Alfonso XII (1857-1885), King of Spain from 1875 to 1885. He wears the full dress uniform of a Captain General: dark blue jacket with crimson collar and cuffs; embroidery on the collar and three rows of the same on the sleeve cuffs; shoulder guards of double braided gold cord; white knitted waistcoat and breeches with riding boots; crimson silk sash with gold tassels and three gold clasps; white cravat and gloves; dress sword. Hanging from his shoulders are the collars of the Royal and Distinguished Spanish Order of Charles III and the Order of the Golden Fleece. Alfonso wears the Grand Cross (sash and badge) of the Royal and Military Order of Saint Ferdinand, of which he was Sovereign, and the sash of the Order of Charles III is partially visible. In his right gloved hand, he holds the other glove and hat adorned with white feathers, gold braid, and gold buckle. He stands in the throne room of the Royal Palace of Madrid, in front of the thrones of the Kings of Spain, bearing the royal cypher in silver. To his right is a gilt bronze lion cast by Matteo Bonuccelli.
