Portrait of Emperor Alexander I, c.1825-1829. Tsar Alexander I (1777-1825) ruled Russia during the chaotic period of the Napoleonic Wars. He commissioned English portraitist George Dawe to paint 329 portraits of senior Russian military staff who had successfully fought Napoleon during his invasion of Russia, for the Military Gallery of the Winter Palace.
