Portrait of Prince Nikolai Yusupov with a Dog, 1782. Prince Nikolai Borisovich Yusupov (1750-1831) was a patron of the arts, a keen traveller, and spoke five languages. As a diplomat, Prince Nikolai travelled throughout Europe, to France, Germany, Prussia, Austria, and to Italy. During his journey he purchased a large collection of art for the Russian tsar, acting as a mediator between the tsars and European artists.
