Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871): Demonstration in favour of the defenders of Strasbourg, Paris, France, 1870. Demonstration at the Place de la Concorde, in front of the statue of Strasbourg, a city personified in the form of a woman with a sword, symbolising the relationship between Paris and the Alsace region. The statue, by James Pradier, was veiled with black crepe and decorated with flowers in mourning for Alsace-Lorraine, annexed by the German Empire in 1871. Inscriptions read: Vive la République (Long Live the Republic); Honneur et Gloire...(Honour and Glory...); Vive Libre our Mourir (Live Free or Die). From "Historia de la Guerra de Francia y Prusia" (History of the War between France and Prussia), Volume I, published in Barcelona, 1870.
