Festival of Britain, Battersea, London, c1951. In 1951 the northern parts of Battersea Park were transformed into the Festival Pleasure Gardens as part of the Festival of Britain celebrations. Another part of the transformation was the addition of Battersea Funfair, with roller coasters, swings, roundabouts and other attractions. 'Max Myers presents the Rotor - the World's Greatest Sensation - Rotor-Dromes Ltd'. The Rotor was a predecessor to the more modern Gravitron rides. Riders stood around the inside of a large drum that would spin increasingly faster until the centrifugal force was enough to pin everyone to the wall. At that point the floor would drop down and riders could attempt to move up, down, sideways or upside-down.
