Battersea Power Station, London, c1955. Huge brick-built coal-fired power station on the south bank of the River Thames. At times, steam issued from the chimneys, not from the cooling process, but from the curtain of water jets used to wash the smoke clean of anything regarded as injurious or offensive. The power station closed in 1983, and after lying derelict for years, was later developed into shops and flats.
