18 Cheyne Walk, London, c1955. Terraced house on the River Thames, at one time the premises of Irish immigrant James Salter, formerly a barber and a valet to Sir Hans Sloane. Salter first opened a coffee house at no. 59 Cheyne Walk in 1697. By 1715 he had moved his coffee house to the west side of Danvers Street, and then in 1718 to its final location at the newly-built no. 18 Cheyne Walk. He named his Chelsea establishment Don Saltero's Coffee House. Salter was famous for his punch, he could play the fiddle, and would shave, bleed and draw teeth. Part of the attraction of the coffee house was the display of a large collection of unusual objects and curiosities, known as a 'knackatory'. Note pineapple gate posts.
