Festival of Britain, Battersea, London, c1951. The Mermaid Fountain. In 1951 the northern parts of Battersea Park were transformed into the Festival Pleasure Gardens as part of the Festival of Britain celebrations. Bronze 8-ft long statue named 'Miranda', commissioned by the Lockheed Hydraulic Brake Co, Ltd as a tribute to the skill and industry of the people of Britain. The mermaid has legs with fish fins replacing her feet. It was made by Arthur Fleischmann, a Czech sculptor.
