The Cenotaph, Whitehall, London, 1950s. The Cenotaph was designed by Edwin Lutyens (1869-1944) as the national memorial to the war dead. It was unveiled in 1920 and every year on the nearest Sunday to November 11 (Armistice Day), a ceremony is held to commemorate those who have died in war. On the left is the Foreign Office (Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office).
