'The late Judge Frederick Meadows White, Judge of the Clerkenwell County Court, Bencher of the Inner Temple, excelled in...railway and compensation cases; the late Sir John Gilbert, distinguished for his valuable researches in Irish literature and history, Secretary to the Dublin Record Office, Librarian of the Royal Irish Academy, and Trustee of the National Library of Ireland; the late Mr. Samuel Plimsoll will always be remembered as the sailor's friend on account of his important reforms of shipping abuses; the late Mr. Eric Mackay had considerable reputation as a poet; the late Mr. Abel Smith, M.P., staunch Churchman and firm supporter of local and national philanthropies; the late Lord Playfair, Professor of Chemistry at the Royal Institution, Manchester and at Edinburgh University, Postmaster-General; the late Sir Robert Rawlinson, worked under Robert Stephenson as assistant resident engineer to the London and North-Western Railway, served with distinction on the sanitary commissions in the Crimea; the late Sir Thomas Dyke Acland, Bart., represented West Country constituencies in the House of Commons, identified himself with educational questions.
