Six portraits, 1898. 'Lieutenant Thomas Colclough Watson V.C. and Lieutenant James Morris Colvin V.C., Royal Engineers - during the burning of the village of Bilot, Mahmund Valley [North-West Frontier Province], Lieutenant Watson, led [his men] through the flames to dislodge...the enemy whose fire was harassing our troops. Twice he was wounded and driven back, whereupon Lieutenant Colvin continued the struggle; Lieutenant Henry Singleton Pennell, V.C., Derbyshire Regiment (Sherwood Foresters), distinguished himself during the memorable fight at Dargai [N.W F.P,] "under a perfect hail of bullets," twice attempted gallantly to drag Captain Smith to a place of shelter, only desisting when he found that life was already extinct; Sir Nicholas O'Conor, Our New Ambassador at Constantinople, her Majesty's Ambassador at St. Petersburg, Attaché to the Embassy at Berlin...; the late Lieutenant Frederick T. Parker, 5th Dragoon Guards, carried off on June 3 by enteric fever, his untimely death has caused the keenest regret among his brother officers; the late Lieutenant Beauchamp St. John Bellairs, died while in command of H.M.S. Jackdaw on the Niger River, [also] employed in land operations against the Somalis at Kisimayu, on the East Coast of Africa'. From "Illustrated London News", 1898.
