The Funeral of Mr. Gladstone: grave of Mr. Gladstone in the North Transept, Westminster Abbey, 1898. 'From Photograph by Bolas. About the grave the mourners knelt or stood. Above them on the right towered the statue of Beaconsfield, while a little farther away Peel's effigy rose with half-averted face. At the head of the grave Mrs. Gladstone, with marvellous fortitude, kept her place. The words of committal were spoken by Dean Bradley, the Lord's Prayer was repeated, and the coffin was solemnly lowered'. British Prime Minister William Eward Gladstone (born 1809) died on 19 May 1898, and was buried in Westminster Abbey on 26 May. Here we see the monuments to Benjamin Disraeli, Peter Warren and Robert Peel, and in the foreground Gladstone's freshly dug grave. From "Illustrated London News", 1898.
