The Death of Mr. Gladstone: hoisting the flag half-mast on the keep, the Old Castle, Hawarden, 1898. 'Hawarden Castle is seen in the background. During the past week the eyes of the world have more than ever been turned to Hawarden, where the last offices for the deceased statesman were in progress...The public honour voted, and her Majesty's gracious assent to the same having been signified, it was with genuine satisfaction that the nation learnt the decision of Mr. Gladstone's family to accept a public funeral'. British prime minister William Ewart Gladstone died on 19 May 1898. His 'country seat' was Hawarden Castle, near the village of Hawarden in Flintshire, Wales. From "Illustrated London News", 1898.
