Légende

The Crucifixion, 1898. 'M. Tissot's "Life of Christ," comprising three hundred and sixty-five compositions from the four Gospels, with notes and explanatory drawings by the artist, has just been published by Sampson Low in London and by Lemercier in Paris in a set of very handsome volumes. M. Tissot is an artist of extraordinary ability and imaginativeness. He has begun by setting on one side all the old conventions which have gathered around the handling of the personality and work of Christ, and has made the definite attempt to restore the events of Scriptural history, so far as the New Testament is concerned, from a realistic standpoint. He has not taken the trouble to turn the peasantry of the Apostles into the aristocracy of a picturesque civilisation, but he has given you the true types as (so it appears to him) they were chosen by Christ for the labours of their lives...in these volumes M. Tissot has produced something very like a masterpiece'. Vernon Blackburn. From "Illustrated London News", 1898.
