Légende
His Highness Seyyid Ali, son of the Sultan of Zanzibar, 1898. 'A portrait is here reproduced of the Heir-Apparent to the Sultanate of Zanzibar, who is at present acquiring an education in European ideas in general, and English ones in particular, in this country, and even thinks of taking a degree at Oxford, a course rendered natural by the predominance of British influences in the Zanzibar Protectorate. His Highness is the son of the Sultan or Seyyid Hamoud bin Mahomed bin Saïd, who was the claimant chosen by the British Government, it will be remembered, to succeed the dead Sultan Hamed, after the disturbances of the autumn of 1896.' Ali bin Hamud of Zanzibar (1884-1918), also known as Ali II, was the eighth Sultan of Zanzibar from 1902 to 1911. During his reign, slavery in Zanzibar was fully abolished, with the abolition of concubinage in 1909. Ali II abdicated the throne in December 1911 due to ill health and later lived in Europe until his death in 1918 in Paris.' From "Illustrated London News", 1898.
