Légende

The last surviving Galapagan Tortoise, 1898. '[The Hon. Walter Rothschild has presented] to the Zoological Society what is generally held to be the last surviving specimen of the Galapagan tortoise. This creature, whose years are estimated at something under a modest century and a half, has a history which dates from the year 1813, when it was carried off from Chatham Island by Captain Porter, of the American navy...it was...translated to Sydney, where it was long an object of curious interest, but after the death of its owner Mr. Macdonald agreed to sell it to Mr. Rothschild. After a rough voyage...the famous tortoise reached Plymouth on March 27 by the overdue P. and O. steamship Oceana. Mr. A. Thomson, head keeper to the Zoological Society, was already in waiting to receive the illustrious newcomer, and superintended the transport of its crate to the Great Western Railway. Owing to the unwieldy size of its cage the creature was eventually given the liberty of an entire van, where it was banked up with foot-warmers as a remedy against the cold, which seemed even to threaten its life...the creature was eventually safely installed in its new home, where it has since held a daily reception.'
