Writers of the Day: No. XXXVI. - Mr. Stanley J. Weyman, 1898. 'Mr. Stanley Weyman, whose new historical romance, "Shrewsbury," is reviewed in these columns, is a native of Shropshire, having been born at Ludlow in 1855. Educated at Shrewsbury School and Christ Church, Oxford, he eventually chose the Bar for his profession, and practised up to the year 1889, when he published his first romance, "The House of the Wolf." His second novel, "The New Rector," dealt with modern life, but in "The Story of Francis Cludde" he returned to the field of historical romance, in which he has proved himself a master by his subsequent volumes - "A Gentleman of France," "Under the Red Robe," "My Lady Rotha," and "The Red Cockade." The stage version of "Under the Red Robe" has been one of the most successful plays of modern times. Mr. Weyman's latest novel forms the present serial in the Cornhill Magazine.' From "Illustrated London News", 1898.
