Mr. Podger's vow and its fulfilment, 1898. Fox hunting scenes. 'During the exasperating stoppage Mr. Podger M.F.H. [Master of Fox Hounds] swore a mighty oath that he would kill a May fox; According to his word, one bright morning in the Merry Month, he gaily took the field; The famous veteran [fox] 'Bobtailed Jack' was found at home; He first led them through Farmer Giles' lambs, where some slight irregularities occurred; Then straight away over the cornlands - here certain farmers made themselves objectionable; The sun being very much in evidence, the pursuers were obliged to call a halt about noon; Eventually they got on terms with the rascal, but even then it looked very much as though he would beat them; However he lay down at last and hounds just managed to walk up and kill him. So Mr. Podger attained to the heights of his ambition'. From "Illustrated London News", 1898.
