Portrait of Lady Louisa Leveson-Gower (1749/50-1827), later Baroness Macdonald, as Spes, 1767. Angelica Kauffman was one of two female painters among the founding members of the Royal Academy of Art in London in 1768. Spes (Latin for Hope) was worshipped as a goddess in ancient Roman religion.
