Portrait of Anton Ulrich von Holzhausen, c1758-1759. Full-length portrait of a young boy in a lace-trimmed dress. In the western world, small boys wore gowns or dresses until they were 'breeched', ie dressed in breeches or trousers. Anton Ulrich Carl von Holzhausen (1754-1832) grew up to be a councillor and mayor of the city of Frankfurt am Main.
