Emblematic Representation, 1600. This copper panel is the reverse of a scene portraying the lawless pursuits of mankind before the Flood. This emblem comments on the event. The learned contemporary will have been able to decipher the individual motifs in this picture puzzle, and recognize the relationship they bear to the Biblical scene. These include a caduceus, a peacock, a goat, swords, a cornucopia, and a winged hand holding a hammer and other tools.
