The Queen's Birthday Honours to Literature - Sir Walter Besant, 1895. Engraving from a photograph. 'Born in 1838 at Portsmouth; educated at King's College and Christ's College, Cambridge. Wrote, with James Rice, "Ready Money Mortiboy." Since this collaborator's death his novels have included "All Sorts and Conditions of Men" and "Children of Gibeon".'
