The Duke and Duchess of York at Sheffield, 1895. 'Miss Muriel Lockwood presenting a Bouquet; The Duchess of York unlocking the Hospital Door; The Duke of Norfolk reading the Address; Laying the Foundation Stone...the Public Hospital in West Street...is being rebuilt and...various extensions are being made. The new wing was opened by the Duchess of York, and different departments of the hospital were inspected. The royal party then went to the new portion of the hospital, of which the corner-stone was, after a brief religious ceremony, laid by the Duke of York...In reply to an address presented by the Duke of Norfolk, his Royal Highness stated that further accommodation would be provided for about seventy patients at a cost of £50,000, towards which total the Duke of Norfolk had contributed the sum of £5000. The Sheffield Town Trustees have subscribed the same amount: the late Mr. Bernard Wake gave £6150, and Mr. W. D. Allen has given £1000. The acquisition of ground has absorbed various generous legacies, notably that left by Miss Ray. The Duchess of York received many cheques from ladies on behalf of the hospital, which, as her husband announced amid cheers, will henceforward be known as the Royal Sheffield Hospital'.
