The Right Hon. J. E. Denison, afterwards Viscount Ossington - Speaker from 1857 to 1872, (1895). 'The Speakers of the Century. Since the beginning of the century there have been seven Speakers of the House of Commons, five of whom have occupied this exalted office during the Queen's reign. Mr. John Evelyn Denison was unanimously elected to succeed Mr. Shaw-Lefevre, who had been elevated to the Upper House under the title of Viscount Eversley. For nearly fifteen years Mr. Denison held office, impressing the House by his impartiality and refinement rather than by his strength. It was at his suggestion that the "Speaker's Commentary to the Bible" was compiled - hence its title. He resigned office owing to failing health, was created Viscount Ossington, but only survived a year after his retirement'. From "Illustrated London News", 1895.
