Sir Thomas Fowell Buxton, new Governor of Western Australia, 1895. Engraving from a photograph. 'The choice of Sir Thomas Fowell Buxton, Bart., to be the new Governor of Western Australia (now so often abbreviated into Westralia) is further evidence of Lord Rosebery's appreciation of those who favour Federation. Sir Thomas has been interested in colonial matters for some time, and also knows a good deal about South African politics. He comes of an old Essex family, and is fifty-eight years old. His grandfather, whose name he bears, was created a baronet in 1840 as a recognition of his services in connection with the abolition of slavery. His father was a member of Parliament, and one of his brothers represented Andover for five years in the House of Commons. Sir Thomas himself was M.P. for Lyme Regis from 1865 to 1868, and has since been an unsuccessful candidate on more than one occasion. The Governor-elect married, in 1862, Lady Victoria Noel, youngest daughter of the first Earl of Gainsborough, and has five sons and five daughters'. From "Illustrated London News", 1895.
