The Chitral Expedition: the Fort at Chitral as seen from the river, 1895. Engraving from a photograph supplied by Sir William Lockhart. 'The particular spot to which the name is given is a collection of six large villages, extending for about three miles along both sides of the river, the fort being on the right bank. Here is, no doubt, the residence of the Mehtar, or ruling prince. The tall towers are peculiar to the region; they are built with stone and wood - the latter serving the purpose of binding, and implying that lime is scarce. This combination of stone and wood is found in various forms of construction in other parts of the Himalayas'. From "Illustrated London News", 1895.
