Mining in New Zealand - Achilles Gold-Fields, Limited: house containing Pelton water-wheels &c, 1895. 'Now that so much notice is being given to the gold-mining industry in New Zealand, it may not be out of place to call attention to the Shares of the above-named Company, which have not yet participated to any appreciable extent in the rise which other properties in that field have attained. This Company owns the celebrated Phoenix Mine, known to be one of the richest and best Gold Mines in New Zealand...The property is situated on Skipper's Creek, Shotover River District, Lake County, Otago...A considerable amount of development work has been done and ore extracted, which is reported to be sufficient to keep the 30-stamp mill, owned by the Company, fully supplied for at least three years. It is contemplated to increase the number of stamps, besides which additional water-power is being brought in, with a view to putting up more Pelton water-wheels. As soon as this is completed the output will be doubled, with the prospect that the dividend earning capacity will be increased...The views show the 30-stamp Mill, Hoist, Machinery, &c., employed for the working and development of the property'.
