Our Illustrations refer to the naval and military operations of the Japanese on the southern shore of the Gulf of Pe-chi-li, the landing of the army on the Shang Tung promontory, and its advance westward along the coast to attack Wei-hai-Wei, of which movements, and the result of the conflict for that important Chinese seaport, we have already given some account...Chefoo, a treaty port where many Europeans reside, has not been attacked. The more recent actions, in Manchuria, to the north of the gulf, where the larger river, Liao-Yang, descends from Mukden to its issue on the seacoast near Niuchuang, have brought the victorious Japanese forces along the road towards Pekin...'.
