The International Rugby Football-Match at Richmond on March 9: the English team, 1895. 'The game which was played under Rugby Union rules, between Scotland and England, ended in a victory for the former team. England still holds, however, a slight advantage in the record of twenty-two matches, of which seven are credited to Scotland, eight to England, and seven have been drawn. There were about twenty thousand spectators to watch the game, which was full of interest from beginning to end. The Scotch forwards proved once more that "union is strength," being well supported by the brilliant play of W. P. Donaldson at half. Byrne scored a goal from a penalty, and soon afterwards G. T. Neilson placed a penalty goal from a full forty yards' mark close to the touch line. Eventually Scotland gained the conquest by a goal from a penalty kick and a try to a goal from a penalty kick - six points to three. Mr. W. Wilkins, of the Welsh Union, officiated as referee. The play of John Goodall, centre, was particularly fine'. From "Illustrated London News", 1895.
