The Loss of the North German Lloyd steam-ship "Elbe": captain and stewards of the "Elbe" at a concert on deck, 1895. '...the Elbe came into collision...off Lowestoft with another steamer, and in twenty minutes foundered...[She] was struck abaft the engine-room, and the inrush of water through the large hole soon caused the steamer to sink. There were only twenty survivors from this terrible disaster...most of the souls on board being of German nationality...[They were] picked up by a Lowestoft smack, the Wildflower, and reached Lowestoft safely...The German Consul at Lowestoft conveyed them to the Sailors' Home and the Suffolk Hotel, where they were carefully tended after their frightful experiences...The German Emperor expressed the deep sorrow felt by the nation at the loss of the Elbe. Her Majesty the Queen, prompt as usual in her sympathy, telegraphed to the agent of the North German Lloyd Company: "I am greatly distressed at the terrible disaster to the Elbe, and will be glad to know as to the condition of those rescued, and if there are hopes of there being any other survivors".'
