The Loss of the North German Lloyd steam-ship "Elbe": the damaged steam-ship "Crathie", 1895. 'From Photo supplied by the London Correspondent of the "Liverpool Shipping Telegraph"...At half-past five o'clock in the morning, the Elbe came into collision forty-seven miles south-west from Haaks light-ship off Lowestoft with another steamer, and in twenty minutes foundered. The Elbe had only left Bremen on the previous day for Southampton and New York, and carried 199 passengers and a crew of 149, most of the souls on board being of German nationality. There were only twenty survivors from this terrible disaster...The Crathie, an Aberdeen steamer belonging to a syndicate, is supposed to have been the cause of the collision. Captain A. Gordon, of this vessel, stated that while he was at the foot of the companion the Crathie sustained a severe shock. The water came pouring into his cabin, and, said he, "I hurried on deck, and the first thing I saw was a large strange ship across the Crathie's bows. Immediately after the collision the Crathie's engines were stopped and reversed. I was not able to distinguish the name of the other ship on account of the darkness, but I was under the impression that the other steamer proceeded on her voyage".'
