Advertisement for Peter Robinson mourning wear, 1895. 'FASHIONABLE MOURNING AT MODERATE PRICES. PETER ROBINSON, 256 to 264, REGENT ST.' By the 19th century, mourning customs in England had developed into a complex set of rules, particularly among the upper classes. Women were expected to wear heavy, concealing black clothing, and veils of black crêpe. Special caps and bonnets, usually in black or other dark colours, went with these ensembles; mourning jewellery, often made of jet, was also worn, and became highly popular in the Victorian era.
