English cricketers in Australia: the Adelaide Cricket Oval (the English team in the field), 1895. 'The fortunes of the English...[team] are being followed with increasing interest, and they have proved to be full of that "glorious uncertainty" which makes the game so delightful. The picture,...with Mr. Stoddart's eleven fielding, ought to be regarded by Australians as a specially appropriate record of a match in which they gave the Englishmen plenty of work in the field. Lyons and Giffen are at the wickets...South Australia defeated the English eleven by six wickets...one reads that "it was an especial pleasure to see each day so many of the youth and beauty of Adelaide gracing the hard lines of the pavilions...Nor were the ladies only there to see each other and be seen; they evinced a deep interest in the play, and were foremost in applauding a fine stroke or a brilliant piece of fielding"...The Englishmen scored 476 runs in their first innings, and 130 in their second; the South Australians made 383 in their first innings, and 226 for four wickets in their second innings. The later performances of Mr. Stoddart's eleven have shown that the Australians have little to learn in the game in order to beat the best English cricketers'. From "Illustrated London News", 1895.
