The Haskell Institute, a training college for Indians, at Lawrence, in Kansas, 1890. 'The Chapel; Indian Girls in School Dress; A Chief's Daughter; Indian Boys in School Dress; Harvey Whiteshield, a finished pupil; Indian Boy at Home; Town of Lawrence from the Kansas River; Little Elk - Pawnee Chief - a pupil's father...[A boarding-school] under the control of the United States Government. The inmates are male and female members from all tribes living in the Indian territory, our correspondent having seen there representatives of twenty-six different tribes. The Cheyennes are the brightest and easiest to teach. Harvey Whiteshield, one of this tribe, and son of the principal chief of the tribe - Chief White Shield - [studied at] the Haskell Institute. The boys are taught reading, writing, and arithmetic, with carpentry and waggon-building and tailoring. The girls learn reading, writing, arithmetic, sewing, and cooking. The pupils' uniforms are all made by the boys and girls...The idea is to educate the pupils, and teach them useful trades, so as to wean them from their nomadic way of living. The beneficial effects of the institution of this training college will be seen fully when the majority of the tribes are educated'. From "Illustrated London News", 1890.
